Written & Recorded by Adam Wazonek

In memory of Duncan's missing spaceman

lyrics

I saw a show about a fellow named Granger Taylor on the CBC
Down on a farm near the island town of Duncan lived a master of big machines
Set his sights beyond the blue horizon
And they said they were on their way
A visionary of staggering genius and a solitary man
He dragged a locomotive out of the forest and rebuilt the thing by hand
But an offer was on the table
It was too good for him to stay

And when all’s said and done
Were you the chosen one
Are they waiting in vain for the return of the prodigal son?
Somebody’s still waiting for the lights and the rumbling sound
Waiting for the ship to touch down
If they had what it takes to get a big man off the ground

Busy were the hands of the passionate craftsman
Holding the dream so dear
The Kittyhawk would get you high but not enough to escape the atmosphere
He’d look up to the sky and wonder
Could they help him out somehow?
Studying the secrets of rocket propulsion from intergalactic dreams
Some would say a telepathic communication, some say LSD
Spaceman, are you history
Are you still out there now?

And when all’s said and done
Were you the chosen one
Are they waiting in vain for the return of the prodigal son?
Somebody’s still waiting for the lights and the rumbling sound
Waiting for the ship to touch down
If they had what it takes to get a big man off the ground

In capital letters on a note on the door his mother and his father learned
He’d been selected for a trip through the cosmos, but one day he’d return
It was a startling correspondence
Granger was good as gone
He said his goodbyes to the folks in the diner and he headed on down the road
Underneath the cover of the storm of the century, they said they’d meet him on Mt. Prevost
He blew up the truck and gave himself up
Up to the great beyond
