I try not to be one who critiques the way others are living
But watching them closely, this much I’m willing to say
It seems standard procedure is to as for much more than what’s given
And incur a debt of the soul that cannot be repaid

And as years roll on by, watching the world going under
Must I only believe but in what lies in front of my eyes?
Who’s at the helm of this sinking ship, is the same one, I wonder
Who breaks the morning, and who paints and eastern sunrise?

Well, some find their solace in sharing their love with another
But I have my doubts about how much I’ve got left to give
And some take their souls and relinquish control to the father
And the texts of the ancients will dictate the lives that they live

Does a graceful forgiver or a bringer of vengeance and thunder
Reside o’er the heavens and weathers the change of the tides?
Who’s at the helm of this sinking ship, is the same one I wonder
Who breaks the morning and who breaks the eastern sunrise?

To laugh with the skeptics, can one ever be enlightened
Must one reject all these worldly pleasures impure
Must a new trail be blazed to choose the path of the righteous?
The fact of the matter is no one can ever be sure

And as the list grows of what and with whom I should take issue
The cynic of god has turned into a cynic of man
Must I follow those who profess to be bastions of virtue?
Or look to the heavens and place my will in his hands

I don’t ask for salvation, just protection from these spells I go under
To make sense of this life, lord above knows we’re all trying
Who’s at the helm of this sinking ship, is the same one I wonder
Who breaks the morning and who breaks the eastern sunrise?
